About this dive site

This dive site, located at the southern tip of Ari Atoll in the Maldives, is internationally acclaimed as one of the premier locations worldwide for encounters with whale sharks. The area serves as a natural aggregation point where abundant plankton and nutrients attract dozens of these majestic creatures throughout the year, making navigation straightforward as divers typically follow the reef edge or boat path to spot them. There is no specific history or story behind the dive site, other than its natural prominence as a whale shark aggregation zone.

The primary attraction here is undoubtedly the whale shark, with frequent sightings almost guaranteed. Beyond these gentle giants, the healthy Maldivian reef ecosystem typically hosts a variety of reef fish such as snappers, fusiliers, parrotfish, and anemonefish. While not the main focus, vibrant soft and hard corals cover parts of the shallow reef, providing shelter and food for smaller marine life, sustained by the rich plankton environment.

Whale Shark Point is exceptional as it offers consistent whale shark sightings all year round, though specific months might see higher concentrations. For divers, the shallow depths make it an ideal spot for extended bottom times and a relaxed experience. Snorkelers and freedivers will find this site particularly rewarding due to the excellent visibility and the high likelihood of encounters near the surface, making it perfectly suitable for observing these magnificent creatures without heavy gear. Always maintain a respectful distance from the whale sharks and follow local guidelines.
