About this dive site

This dive site is the RTN Kled Gaeow, a 47-meter long Royal Thai Navy vessel purposefully sunk on March 19, 2014, to create an artificial reef. Originally launched as RNoMS Norfest in Norway in 1948, it was acquired by Thailand in 1956. The wreck lies almost upright with a 20-degree list, facing north to south, at a maximum depth of 26 meters, about 800-1000 meters east of Piley Bay, Ko Phi Phi Ley. Its structure allows for exploration, and its size makes it a prominent underwater landmark.

Over the years, the Kled Gaeow has transformed into a vibrant artificial reef, attracting a variety of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter large schools of barracuda, snapper, and fusiliers circling the structure. Moray eels, lionfish, and stonefish often hide within its crevices, while various nudibranchs, crabs, and shrimps provide excellent macro photography opportunities. Soft corals and sea anemones have started to colonize the wreck, adding color and life.

The best time to visit this dive site is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is calm and visibility is generally at its best. Divers should be comfortable with wreck diving fundamentals and aware of potential currents. Freedivers will find the 26-meter depth suitable for practicing deeper dives while exploring the wreck's exterior. It offers excellent opportunities for wide-angle photography of the wreck itself and macro photography of the diverse invertebrate life.
