This dive site, Batu Bulan, meaning 'Moon Rock', takes its name from a distinctive spherical rock found on its shore. It is conveniently located just an 8-minute boat ride from Summer Bay Resort. The dive begins in a pleasant shallow sandy bay at 5 meters, which gently descends to depths of 18-20 meters. Divers typically follow the natural slope of the reef, making navigation straightforward.
The site is characterized by an extensive field of coral reef, suggesting a vibrant ecosystem. Divers can expect to encounter diverse hard and soft corals, providing habitat for numerous reef fish species such as parrotfish, damselfish, and clownfish. The rich coral formations also make it an ideal spot for macro photography, with potential sightings of nudibranchs, shrimps, and various crustaceans.
The optimal period to visit Batu Bulan is during Malaysia's East Coast diving season, generally from March to October, when conditions are calm and visibility is excellent. Its shallow, gently sloping profile makes it exceptionally beginner-friendly and perfect for extended bottom times. Both scuba divers and freedivers will appreciate the vibrant coral gardens and abundant small marine life.
