This dive site, Wonder Reef, is the world's first artistically designed buoyant reef located off the Gold Coast. It comprises nine magnificent individual reef spirals, each uniquely anchored to the seafloor and swaying with the ocean's energy, mimicking a giant kelp forest. Opened in 2022, this innovative project aims to create new marine habitats and provide a distinctive underwater experience. Divers can explore the intricate structures, observing how marine life interacts with this dynamic environment.
As a newly established artificial reef, Wonder Reef is rapidly attracting a diverse array of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter various species of reef fish, including schooling bannerfish, fusiliers, and damselfish. Over time, the structures will become home to hard and soft corals, nudibranchs, and crustaceans. Larger pelagic species such as kingfish, barracuda, and even occasional sharks or rays may visit the reef.
The Wonder Reef offers a unique dive experience suitable for all skill levels, with depths ranging from 8 to 30 meters. The best time to visit is during the warmer months (spring and summer) when water temperatures are comfortable and visibility is typically at its best. Divers should check local weather and current conditions before planning a trip. It's an excellent site for underwater photography, particularly wide-angle shots of the buoyant spirals. Freedivers will also find the dynamic structures and varying depths appealing.
