Mariner's Cave is a hidden sea cave on the west side of Nuapupu Island, a few miles southwest of Neiafu in the Vava'u group. Unlike nearby Swallows Cave, which you can enter from the surface, Mariner's Cave has no visible opening from above the water. Getting in means a short underwater swim: depending on the tide, the upper entrance sits 1–3 m below the surface, and the passage runs about 3 m before you surface inside.
The cave faces west, so mid-to-late afternoon is the best time to visit. Sunlight filters through the underwater entrance and fills the chamber with a deep blue glow. The cave is sealed tightly enough that as ocean swell pushes in, the compressed air fogs out instantly, then clears just as fast when the swell retreats. A torch is useful but not essential in the afternoon.
Snorkeling
Accessible to confident snorkelers who are comfortable with a short breath-hold swim. Dive down to the upper entrance (1–3 m depending on tide), swim roughly 3 m through the passage, and surface inside the chamber. Take a moment to let your eyes adjust, then watch the blue light and the fog-outs as the swell moves. Exit the same way. Note: this is not suited to beginners or anyone uneasy about swimming through an enclosed space.
Diving
There are two entrances: the upper opening at about 3 m, and a deeper swim-through at 12 m for more experienced divers.
A good plan is to enter through the 3 m opening, spend time in the chamber, then descend into the cave's lower section and exit through the 12 m swim-through. Look for the large lobster that lives near this exit; observe, don't disturb.
Once outside, turn left and follow the wall. Around 30 minutes in, at 12 m, you'll reach a sandy patch with two more swim-throughs. The first takes you up from 12 m to 6 m; turn right after it to find the second, which drops you back down to 12 m. Continue along the wall into shallower water and finish the dive at around 6 m.
