This dive site, the Medes Islands archipelago, comprises 7 craggy islands and several islets off the coast of L'Estartit, Spain. It is a renowned marine reserve in the western Mediterranean, protected for over 30 years. Navigation is straightforward given the shallow depths, allowing visitors to explore the rich marine life around the island formations. The protection status has fostered a thriving underwater ecosystem.
Underwater, divers and snorkelers will encounter hundreds of fish, including common dentex, gilt-head sea bream, sargo, and occasionally small dusky groupers. The reserve is particularly noted for its exceptional underwater flora and fauna, making it a vibrant habitat for a variety of marine species.
The Medes Islands are best visited during the warmer months, typically from spring to autumn, when water temperatures are most comfortable for snorkeling and shallow diving. Snorkeling tours departing from L’Estartit are the primary way to experience this beautiful site. Freedivers will find the shallow, clear waters and abundant fish life exceptionally rewarding.
