This dive site, Kari Beyru Thila, is a vibrant thila (underwater pinnacle) situated in a dynamic channel, approximately 40 minutes boat ride from Kandolhu. Declared a national park in 1998, it offers diverse diving opportunities. Its location in a channel means currents can vary significantly, from mild to strong, and dive operators employ different techniques to navigate the site, making it suitable for various experience levels depending on the conditions.
The thila is renowned for its rich marine biodiversity, featuring a spectacular variety of fish life. Divers can expect to encounter larger pelagic species such as grey reef sharks, particularly when currents are strong, attracting these apex predators. The top reef is teeming with lots of tropical fish, while the numerous overhangs shelter great marine life, including various reef fish, colorful hard and soft corals, and smaller invertebrates.
Kari Beyru Thila is considered a must-visit dive site in the Maldives, offering excellent diving conditions generally year-round. The best experiences for encountering bigger fish like sharks are often during periods of stronger current. Snorkelers can enjoy the vibrant top reef, rich with tropical fish, making it suitable for surface exploration. Freedivers will also find the site appealing, with an average depth of 12 meters and plenty to see in the shallower areas, alongside the deeper maximum of 25 meters.
