This dive site, known as Nurse Rock, offers a unique underwater landscape often described as a mini grand canyon. Two massive rock formations stand side by side, separated by a dramatic split. Divers can navigate this split and explore the base of the rocks, where two tight swim-throughs (tunnels) provide an exciting challenge. The site does not have a specific known history or story beyond its geological features.
The abundant bait fish dwelling within the rock split attract a variety of marine life. Divers frequently encounter large cod, crayfish, and moray eels residing in the crevices and inside the rock formations. Wobbegong sharks are also commonly sighted. During the winter months, the site becomes a crucial aggregation point for Grey Nurse Sharks, making it a prime location to observe these magnificent creatures.
The best time to visit Nurse Rock for a chance to see Grey Nurse Sharks is during winter. The moderate depth of 18 meters maximum and average 9 meters, combined with interesting topography and abundant life, makes it suitable for both scuba divers and freedivers. Freedivers can particularly enjoy exploring the shallower split and the challenging swim-throughs, while divers benefit from extended bottom times. It is advisable for divers attempting the swim-throughs to have appropriate experience.
