This dive site is the HMAS Brisbane, a former guided missile destroyer intentionally scuttled in July 2005 to create a thriving artificial reef off Mooloolaba’s Sunshine Coast, Australia. The wreck is a renowned underwater landmark, offering a unique blend of history and marine conservation. A Conservation Park was established around it by the Queensland government, ensuring its protection. Divers can explore the ship's structure, including various deck levels, the bridge, engine room, and gun turret, providing an engaging and easily navigable wreck diving experience.
The HMAS Brisbane is a biodiversity hotspot, teeming with an impressive array of marine life. Over 300 species of fish and more than 200 species of corals have colonised the wreck, creating a vibrant ecosystem. Divers frequently encounter resident turtles, large groupers, various species of rays, and schools of pelagic fish that call the wreck home, making every dive a dynamic encounter with nature.
The best time to visit the HMAS Brisbane is typically during the warmer months from spring through autumn (September to May) when water temperatures are comfortable and visibility is generally at its best. Divers should hold appropriate certifications for wreck diving or dive with experienced local operators. Freedivers can enjoy exploring the shallower sections of the wreck and its surrounding marine life. Always consult local dive operators for current conditions and guided tours.
