This dive site, Twin Caves Spring, features two distinct vents, oriented north-south, situated within a gentle depression on a mill pond bottom. The north vent is approximately 5.6 meters deep, while the site's overall maximum depth reaches 21 meters. Entry to the spring system is visible from Blue Springs, suggesting relatively easy access to this unique freshwater cave and cavern environment, which is characteristic of Florida's extensive limestone geology and spring systems.
While Twin Caves is a freshwater environment and not a typical marine dive, divers can expect to encounter various freshwater species. This includes different types of sunfish, bass, catfish, and potentially freshwater turtles. The clear waters may also reveal unique small invertebrates, aquatic plant life, and organisms adapted to cave and spring ecosystems.
The consistent temperature of Florida's springs, typically around 22°C (72°F), makes Twin Caves a year-round diving destination. The best time to visit for overall comfort is generally during the cooler months from fall to spring, avoiding the peak summer heat and crowds. Divers should be comfortable with overhead environments if planning to explore beyond the cavern zone. Freedivers will find the shallower vent and overall depth suitable for breath-hold diving.
