This dive site, Silver Glen Springs, is a pristine freshwater spring located within the Ocala National Forest. It features a large, semicircular pool with exceptionally clear water and a constant temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius). Most of the pool is shallow, about 4 feet deep, but deeper areas reaching 18 feet can be found near the spring vents. As a natural spring, navigation is straightforward within the contained pool environment, offering easy exploration for all levels.
Divers and snorkelers can expect to encounter large schools of striped bass, which are a common sight in the clear waters. The springs are also known for occasional visits from West Indian manatees, especially during cooler months when they seek warmer spring waters. While not a typical coral reef, the spring environment supports unique freshwater flora and fauna, characteristic of Florida's natural springs.
Silver Glen Springs is suitable for year-round visits due to its constant water temperature, but manatee sightings are more frequent in winter. Its crystal-clear water and abundant fish make it an excellent spot for wide-angle photography and general underwater enjoyment. It is particularly recommended for snorkelers and freedivers due to its relatively shallow depths and calm conditions, offering a relaxing and rewarding experience.
