About this dive site

This dive site is the Sheridan, a 180 ft ocean-going tug intentionally sunk as part of the Pinellas County Artificial Reef Program. The tug sits upright on the seabed at a maximum depth of 23 meters, making navigation straightforward by following the wreck structure. Divers can explore the exterior and potentially the wheelhouse, which is located at approximately 15 meters, offering interesting swim-through opportunities for experienced divers. This purpose-sunk vessel provides an excellent artificial habitat and a historical glimpse into maritime engineering.

The Sheridan wreck is a vibrant ecosystem teeming with marine life. Notable residents include large Goliath groupers, sleek barracudas, and various snapper species. Many other common Gulf of Mexico fishes can be observed, making it a lively site for fish identification. While corals may be nascent as it's an artificial reef, various sponges and encrusting organisms contribute to the biodiversity, providing sustenance and shelter for smaller invertebrates and juvenile fish.

The best time to visit the Sheridan wreck is typically during the warmer months when water temperatures are comfortable and visibility is generally better. The site is a highlight for wreck enthusiasts and underwater photographers focusing on large marine life. Freedivers with sufficient breath-hold capabilities will find the average depth of 11 meters and the wheelhouse at 15 meters very accessible. Divers should be mindful of potential currents and always dive within their training and experience level, especially when considering wreck penetration.
