This dive site features a sunken barge resting at a maximum depth of 16 meters, with an average depth of 8 meters, off the coast of St. Petersburg. The barge has become a thriving artificial reef, heavily encrusted with marine growth. Divers can explore the exterior of the wreck, observing the various nooks and crannies that provide shelter for marine life. For experienced divers, there are openings that allow for safe penetration into certain sections of the barge, offering a unique opportunity to explore its interior structure.
The 116 ft Barge is renowned for its resident marine life. Prominent among them are several Goliath Groupers, which can often be found in and around the wreck. Numerous Gag Groupers, snapper, and Jacks also frequent the site, alongside a variety of reef fish and bait fish. Occasionally, divers may encounter a nurse shark resting near the wreck, or spot mantis shrimp in the sandy areas surrounding the barge.
While no specific best time to visit is provided, the warm waters of Florida generally offer good diving conditions throughout much of the year, with late summer and early fall often being prime for encountering large grouper aggregations. Divers should be comfortable with wreck diving and buoyancy control, especially if planning to explore the interior. Its shallow average depth also makes it suitable for freedivers looking to experience a wreck and its inhabitants without scuba gear. The highlight of the dive is undoubtedly the chance to observe the impressive Goliath Groupers and explore the structure of this artificial reef.
