This dive site, PetroStar Cove, is nestled between a bustling city pier and the PetroStar mooring dock, serving as the primary winter training ground for Test The Waters Dive Center. Divers typically access the site via a public kayak launch on the right side of the cove, while the dive center benefits from private access through the PetroStar access ramp. The cove itself forms a rounded rock bowl, creating unique underwater topography.
Despite its industrial surroundings, the city pier on the left of the cove supports a thriving coldwater reef system. Divers can expect to encounter various cold-water marine life, including diverse fish species like rockfish and greenlings, numerous crabs, sea anemones, and potentially nudibranchs, thriving within the pier pilings and rocky substrate.
PetroStar Cove is best visited by planning dives meticulously around the strong tidal influences to maximize safety and enjoyment, especially for training purposes. While it's a preferred winter training site, year-round diving is possible with appropriate cold-water gear. The shallow depths make it suitable for both snorkeling and freediving, offering a unique glimpse into a robust coldwater ecosystem.
