This dive site, Eagle Ray Alley, is situated between the North Star and The Winch Hole dive sites in the Florida Keys. It is primarily a sand channel that runs seaward from Molasses Shallow to Logan’s Run. High relief coral ledges on either side offer deep undercuts, creating a diverse and interesting underwater navigation.
As its name suggests, Eagle Rays are frequent visitors to this alley, gliding gracefully over the sand. The sandy bottom is also home to fascinating Yellow Headed Jawfish, which can be observed tending their burrows, as well as various Stingrays. Look closely along the coral ledges and within the undercuts to discover well-camouflaged Scorpionfish and a host of other smaller marine invertebrates and fish seeking shelter.
While specific peak times are not detailed, the Florida Keys offer excellent diving conditions year-round, with warmer waters in summer and good visibility generally consistent. This shallow site is ideal for both scuba divers and freedivers, offering ample opportunity to explore the unique interplay between the sand channel and coral ecosystems. Divers should pay attention to the potential for eagle ray sightings, particularly along the channel, and explore the intricate coral ledges for macro life.
