This dive site, Carysfort Lighthouse Reef, is situated in the remote Upper Florida Keys, making it one of the more pristine and less crowded diving destinations in the region. It spans 2.2 square miles as the largest Sanctuary Protected Area within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. A prominent historic lighthouse marks its shallowest area, serving as a landmark for navigation and adding a unique visual element to the underwater landscape.
The reef is renowned for its vibrant and extensive coral formations, particularly stunning examples of Elkhorn and Star Corals, which provide a complex habitat for an incredibly diverse array of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter numerous species of reef fish, including parrotfish, snappers, grunts, and damselfish, as well as various invertebrates, rays, and possibly sea turtles.
Carysfort Lighthouse Reef is an excellent year-round destination, though the summer months offer warmer water temperatures, while winter often brings enhanced visibility. Its shallow average depth of 5 meters and maximum depth of 11 meters make it perfectly suitable for divers of all skill levels, including beginners. It's also an ideal spot for snorkelers and freedivers looking to explore a healthy and bustling coral ecosystem.
