About this dive site

This dive site, Dry Rocks & Christ of the Deep, is an iconic underwater landmark off Key Largo, Florida. Centered around the famous 9-foot tall 'Christ of the Deep' statue, also known as 'Christ of the Abyss,' installed in 1965, the site offers a unique blend of historical artifact and natural beauty. Divers and snorkelers navigate around the statue, observing its grandeur against the backdrop of the Dry Rocks reef, making for an unforgettable experience.

The site is renowned for its rich and colorful sea life, typical of the Florida Keys reef ecosystem. Visitors can expect to encounter a vibrant array of reef fish such as parrotfish, angelfish, snappers, and grunts. Diverse coral formations, including brain coral and various gorgonians, create a beautiful habitat for numerous invertebrates and smaller marine creatures. Sea turtles, particularly green and loggerhead, are also occasional visitors to this thriving reef.

The Christ of the Deep is suitable for year-round visitation, though the calmer seas of summer often provide the most comfortable conditions. The shallow maximum depth of 10 meters and average depth of 5 meters make it ideal for beginners, snorkelers, and freedivers alike. When visiting, divers should focus on wide-angle photography to capture the majestic statue and surrounding reef, while snorkelers will enjoy the easy access to abundant marine life from the surface. Always be mindful of marine park regulations, as this site is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
