This dive site, Calusa Beach, is located within the popular Bahia Honda State Park on the bay side of Bahia Honda Key. It is primarily known for its exceptionally calm and shallow waters, making it an excellent spot for families, children, and those new to snorkeling or swimming. There is no complex navigation required; visitors can simply explore the sandy bottom, seagrass beds, and scattered rocks close to the shore. The site does not boast any significant historical structures or stories relevant to diving.
The marine life at Calusa Beach is modest, described as having "a few fish" visible over the rocks and seagrass. Typical residents might include juvenile snapper, pinfish, small grunts, and other small reef fish that frequent shallow, protected bays. The seagrass beds provide a nursery habitat and foraging grounds, while the rocks offer minor shelter for crustaceans and small invertebrates.
The best time to visit Calusa Beach is during calm weather to ensure optimal visibility and enjoyment of the tranquil conditions. It serves as a perfect spot for individuals to get comfortable in the water, practice snorkeling techniques, or introduce children to marine life in a safe environment. While suitable for freediving due to its calm nature, its maximum depth of 2 meters means it offers very limited challenges or exploration opportunities for experienced freedivers.
