This dive site, known as Black Jack Hole, is named for the large population of blackjack fish (Black Trevally) that inhabit the area between May and July. The reef drops off sharply, creating a dramatic underwater landscape of sea fans and sponges. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the drop-off, but divers should be mindful of potential currents, especially during stronger weather conditions. There's no known specific history associated with the site's naming beyond the prevalence of the blackjack fish.
The marine life here is incredibly diverse. You can expect to encounter spiny lobsters, green moray eels, large Nassau groupers, barracuda, tarpons, spotted eagle rays, blacktip sharks, and snappers. The vibrant coral formations also support a wide array of smaller reef fish and invertebrates.
The best time to visit is between May and July when the blackjack fish are most abundant. Visibility is generally good, but can vary depending on weather conditions. Strong currents can occasionally be present, so appropriate experience and training are recommended for divers. Freediving is not recommended due to the depth and potential currents. Divers should maintain buoyancy control and awareness of their surroundings.
