This dive site, Turtle Rock, is a renowned spot on the west side of Koh Similan, island number 8 in Thailand's Similan Islands National Park. Its distinctive feature is a large granite boulder resembling a turtle, which serves as a natural landmark and often a navigation point. Divers typically explore the vibrant reef surrounding this iconic rock, following its contours and enjoying the healthy coral gardens.
The marine life here is abundant and diverse, living up to its name with frequent sightings of sea turtles. The reef is adorned with impressive gorgonians and extensive staghorn coral formations. Schools of yellowtail barracudas and batfish are common, alongside colorful angelfish and trumpet fish. Lucky divers may also encounter leopard sharks or whitetip reef sharks cruising the perimeter.
The best time to visit the Similan Islands, including Turtle Rock, is typically from November to May when the weather is calm and visibility is at its peak. This site's shallow average depth of 9 meters makes it ideal for beginners and excellent for photography. Freedivers will also find the calm conditions and rich marine life suitable for breath-hold exploration.
