About this dive site

This dive site, known as Junkyard, is an artificial reef primarily consisting of repurposed items like a Jeep and a toilet seat, strategically placed to create new habitats. Ranging from 10 to 12 meters in depth, it serves as an excellent site for exploration, offering easy navigation around the distinct structures. While not a natural reef, its unique genesis as a man-made sanctuary for marine life makes it a fascinating spot for divers of all levels.

The Junkyard teems with diverse marine inhabitants, transforming the artificial structures into vibrant ecosystems. Divers can expect to encounter a variety of normal tropical fish such as angelfish, bannerfish, and surgeonfish. Additionally, the site is home to some rarer species like colourful boxfish and curious pufferfish, all thriving within these innovative new habitats.

The best time to visit Junkyard, like most dive sites around Koh Tao, is during the dry season from March to May or September to November when conditions are generally calm with excellent visibility. This shallow and sheltered site is perfectly suited for beginners, offering a safe and engaging environment to practice skills and observe marine life. Both snorkelers and freedivers will find the depths and abundance of fish highly enjoyable.
