About this dive site

Lobster Cave is both a coastal landmark and a popular dive/snorkel site on the east coast of Xiao Liuqiu, close to Yufu Fishing Harbor (漁福漁港). It’s historically named because lobster used to be found there — though today it's more known by its friendly terrain, the rich machine life and resident turtles.

The dive begins from a small sandy beach beside Yufu Fishing Harbor (漁福漁港). Rolling waves can occur during so be careful. The initial descent reaches a 2–3 m flat reef, which gently extends outward before dropping over a sea-urchin-covered ledge. After descending the ledge and heading south, divers reach a small canyon marked by a buoy with Taiwan flags.

This canyon is the usual hangout of the site’s star resident, the green sea turtle affectionately known as “Jenny Turtle (傑尼龜)”. The sandy bottom here makes it an ideal spot for calm turtle encounters and underwater photography. Nearby, divers can also spot giant clams roughly the size of a volleyball. Continuing outward leads to a second small canyon, behind which lies a vibrant area filled with black clownfish and sea anemones.

For experienced divers seeking deeper exploration, the outer section of Lobster Cave features artificial steel reefs deployed by the Fisheries Agency at depths of around 32 m(100ft). Due to the longer swim distance and the potential for strong currents, this area is recommended only for advanced divers. Marine life here includes batfish, lionfish, and occasionally large nudibranchs.

When northbound currents are present, divers can drift along a stunning soft coral and sea whip garden, often described as carpet-like in appearance. Large sea turtles are sometimes seen resting among the corals. At around 15m (45ft) depth, divers encounter an undersea freshwater pipeline that runs from Linbian Township to Xiao Liuqiu. Following the pipeline back toward shore offers excellent macro sightings, including nudibranchs, octopus, mantis shrimp, and lionfish.

During the safety stop, divers should remain neutrally buoyant and be cautious of semi-submersible boats that may pass overhead.
