This dive site offers a unique and privileged experience due to its coastal configuration and surrounding mountains. Located within the southwestern sector of the Betic Cordillera, specifically in the Triassic age formations of filites, quartzites, and limestones extending up to 60 meters, this area is characterized by significant tectonic activity – faulting causing extensive fracturing and landslides. These geological features create a complex underwater landscape with numerous caves and grottos suitable for divers of all levels. The caves, such as Cueva del Lago, CT-17, CT-12, CT-11, Sistema Ovaza, and Cueva de La Virgen (among others including the smaller Cueva de la Isla near Mazarrón), exhibit common traits: a combination of fractures, diaclasses, and faulting leads to volume loss and the formation of large vaults. The caves are often partially submerged and subject to erosion due to relatively high water temperatures and salinity. The area's rugged terrain and underwater conditions present a challenging environment requiring careful planning and navigation.
