This dive site features the wreck of the Carib Cargo, also known as RoRo or Carib Ghost, a prominent and historically significant dive site off Philipsburg, Sint Maarten. The vessel was severely damaged by Hurricane Luis in 1995 and subsequently broke free from its moorings during Hurricane Bertha in 1996, eventually settling as one of the island's premier wreck dives. Divers can explore the remains of this cargo ship, navigating through its structure which now serves as an artificial reef.
The Carib Cargo wreck teems with marine life, offering encounters with large schools of Trevally, French Grunts, and Yellow Snapper. Lucky divers may also spot majestic Stingrays, elusive Reef sharks, and graceful Green Turtles navigating the wreck. Spiny Lobsters are commonly found sheltering within and around the wreck's structure, adding to the site's rich biodiversity.
The best time to visit this dive site is generally during Sint Maarten's dry season, typically from December to May, when weather conditions are calmer and visibility is at its peak. Its shallow to moderate depth range (max 20m, avg 10m) makes it an excellent choice for divers of all experience levels. Freedivers will also find the site highly rewarding due to its accessible depths and abundant marine life.
