Coralita is a beautiful and vibrant dive site located within the protected 'golden triangle' of the Dutch marine reserve in Sint Maarten, directly across from Philipsburg. This gentle reef dive typically starts at 12 meters (40 feet) and gradually descends to around 17-18 meters (60 feet). The underwater landscape features sand bottom gullies and a rich tapestry of both hard and soft coral formations, making it an excellent spot for recreational scuba divers and freedivers.
The site is particularly notable for its ongoing reef restoration efforts. In 2020, the Nature Foundation undertook a Coral Restoration project, successfully outplanting Acropora coral fragments, including some survivors from Hurricane Irma. Following the devastating hurricane, Staghorn coral was nearly wiped out, with 95% of original colonies lost. However, thanks to restoration work, one viable Staghorn fragment has flourished into ten healthy colonies. Divers can witness the recovery of this damaged reef ecosystem firsthand.
Coralita teems with diverse marine life, including frequent encounters with sea turtles and sharks, alongside numerous smaller reef fish, invertebrates, and other fascinating Caribbean creatures. The optimal time to visit is during Sint Maarten's dry season, from December to May, when sea conditions are calmer and underwater visibility is at its best. Divers should always adhere to marine park regulations to help preserve this beautiful natural habitat.
