About this dive site

This dive site is renowned for being the location of the first underwater post box of Malaysia, which is uniquely mounted at the front of the wheelhouse of the 40-foot cargo ship, Mataking 1. The wreck lies at a maximum depth of 19 meters with an average depth of around 9 meters. Divers typically navigate around the wreck to explore its structure and the surrounding environment, looking for both its unique features and marine life. The site is located 39 KM off Semporna town, near Mataking Island.

The clear blue waters of Mataking Post Wreck are home to an impressive array of large pelagic species. Divers frequently encounter majestic eagle rays, graceful manta rays, elusive hammerhead sharks, and vigilant grey reef sharks. While not explicitly detailed, the wreck itself likely hosts a variety of smaller reef fish and invertebrates, adding to the biodiversity.

Visiting Mataking Post Wreck is best done by experienced divers due to the strong currents often present, which can also contribute to the presence of large pelagics. The excellent visibility makes it suitable for wide-angle photography, capturing the wreck and the big animals. While suitable for snorkeling and freediving due to the relatively shallow average depth, awareness of currents is crucial for surface safety and enjoyment.
