This dive site, El Bajo Sea Mounts, is arguably the most renowned dive destination in La Paz, Mexico. It consists of a series of underwater mountains situated in the open ocean of the Sea of Cortez. Divers navigate these seamounts, which are frequently exposed to heavy currents, making it an advanced to expert-level dive primarily accessed by boat.
The site is a hotspot for pelagic encounters, offering divers the chance to see giant manta rays (mobulas), various species of turtles, and schools of hammerhead sharks. Additionally, it's known for seasonal visits from larger marine mammals like humpback and sperm whales, making it a truly exceptional big animal dive.
Due to the strong currents and advanced nature, divers should possess adequate experience and training. While no specific best time is mentioned, the presence of migratory species like whales suggests seasonal variations in sightings. This site is not suitable for snorkeling or general freediving due to the depths and challenging conditions.
