About this dive site

Hondoq Bay, also known as Hondoq ir-Rummien, is a shallow, sheltered bay located on the southeast coast of Gozo, Malta, renowned for its clear, azure waters. This popular dive site is ideal for introductory dives, training courses, snorkelers, and freedivers due to its calm conditions and straightforward navigation. The underwater landscape features a sandy bottom, extensive Posidonia oceanica meadows, and rocky formations.

Divers can explore interesting features such as a water pipeline, arches to the east, and a hidden inlet with a small cave to the west. While the site is accessible to all experience levels, strong swimming skills are advised for exploring the eastern arches and the western cave inlet. A dive light is recommended for the small cave. Navigation is generally simple, following the rocky shoreline and seagrass beds, with no complex features or known wrecks.

Marine life is abundant, making it excellent for macro photographers. Expect to encounter octopuses, cuttlefish, lizardfish, flatfish, flying gurnards, small crabs, blennies, and many small fish sheltering in the rocks and Posidonia meadows. These seagrass beds are vital ecosystems, supporting various juvenile species and small invertebrates.

Hondoq Bay is suitable for diving year-round, though visibility is often better during the warmer months (May-October). It's best visited during calm weather to maximize enjoyment. Always dive with a buddy, maintain visual contact with the surface for freediving, and check weather and visibility conditions before your dive.
