This dive site, Bodu Thila, which translates to 'Big Seamount' in the local language despite its small size, is a captivating reef structure in the Maldives. It rises from a shallow 2 meters at its top, gradually descending to a maximum depth of around 25 meters. Divers typically explore its south side, known for numerous picturesque overhangs that provide both shelter and visual interest. The site is easily navigated by circling the seamount, paying close attention to the features of the southern face.
The marine ecosystem at Bodu Thila is vibrant, featuring beautiful hard corals that form intricate structures across the reef. It hosts a rich variety of common Maldivian marine life, including diverse fish species. A notable highlight is a resident school of very curious batfish, which are known to interact playfully with divers, often following them throughout their exploration. The overhangs are particularly rich in macro life, offering excellent opportunities to discover smaller, hidden creatures.
Bodu Thila is an excellent dive site suitable for most of the year in the Maldives, though specific conditions depend on monsoon seasons. The interaction with the curious batfish is a key highlight for divers. For freedivers, the site offers a fantastic range from shallow reef top to 26 meters, perfect for training and exploration. Snorkelers can also enjoy the vibrant shallow reef crest. Divers should be mindful of potential currents, which can be variable around seamounts, and ensure good buoyancy control to protect the delicate corals and macro life.
