This dive site, Toma No.1, is located off Zamami Island in the Kerama Islands, Japan. It is a popular spot from October to April when north winds are strong, offering shelter and calm conditions. The site features a wide, gently sloping sandy bottom, making it very beginner-friendly with easy navigation.
While coral and turtle encounters are infrequent, the site is rich in 'healing-type' marine life. Divers can expect to see garden eels, various damselfish (blue-green chromis, yellowtail damselfish), slender sweepers, frogfish, seahorses, leafy scorpionfish, fusiliers, trumpetfish, and several species of clownfish (ocellaris, tomato, pink skunk). Banded sea snakes, butterflyfish, and lionfish are also present, though green sea turtle sightings are low.
The best time to visit Toma No.1 is during the colder months, from October to April, when strong northerly winds limit access to other sites. Its clear Kerama visibility and abundance of calm, interesting macro life ensure a safe and enjoyable dive. Both snorkelers and freedivers will find this site suitable due to its shallow depths and tranquil environment.
