This dive site, Tokomasari Reef, is a popular drift dive located approximately 10 minutes by boat from Itoman port in Okinawa, Japan. The reef features distinct areas: a west dome known to attract large pelagic species and an east side celebrated for its vibrant coral formations. Navigation often involves following the current, particularly on the northern side, which is characterized by fast currents.
The marine life at Tokomasari Reef is abundant and diverse. Divers can expect to encounter an impressive array of large pelagics, including giant trevally, Napoleon fish, dogtooth tuna, barracuda, and various species of jacks, especially bigeye jacks in summer. Occasional sightings include multiple shark species, turtles, and even the elusive sawfish. The vibrant corals on the east side provide a habitat for numerous reef fish such as snappers and butterflyfish.
The best time to visit Tokomasari Reef is often during the summer months when bigeye jacks are prevalent. The site is particularly appealing for advanced divers who enjoy the thrill of strong currents and drift diving. For underwater photographers, the site offers excellent opportunities for wide-angle shots of large marine animals and expansive coral landscapes. Due to the variable and sometimes strong currents, divers should be experienced in drift diving techniques.
