This dive site, Zushi, is conveniently located very close to the center of the city in Japan, making it a popular spot for day diving. It's easily accessible by a short 10-minute boat ride from the harbor. Underwater, divers can explore a distinctive wall of rock covered with vibrant soft corals, providing a visually rich environment. While the maximum depth is 22 meters, there are also roots in sandy soil reportedly at a depth of 30 meters, adding a potentially deeper element to the topography.
Marine life is abundant and varied, with schools of Yellowfin Damselfish frequently seen around the coral-covered wall. Divers can expect to encounter a variety of fish species, including yellow snapper, blue snapper, horse mackerel, and spiny lionfish. For those interested in larger marine animals, yellowfin reef sharks and spiny dogfish are also present. Smaller creatures like sea squirts and holly add to the biodiversity, and macro enthusiasts will appreciate the increased number of nudibranchs during the winter months.
The best time to visit Zushi depends on what you wish to see. Summer brings the opportunity to observe schools of amberjacks, adding an exciting pelagic element to the dive. For nudibranch lovers, winter is the prime season when these colorful sea slugs are more prevalent. Given its manageable depth and diverse marine life, Zushi is an excellent choice for a day trip for divers of all experience levels and is also well-suited for freediving.
