This dive site, Murata di Sant'Agostino, is a remarkable shoal located 1.5 miles off the coast of Sant'Agostino in the Lazio region of Italy. Rising from a depth of 38 meters to a shallower 24 meters, it presents a unique underwater landscape. Navigation is relatively straightforward, as the shoal itself provides a clear reference point. The site is known for its rich biodiversity and abundance of marine life.
The area is densely populated with vibrant red coral, along with a multitude of fish species. Divers can expect to encounter lobsters, shrimps, conger eels, moray eels, octopuses, barracudas, sea bream, groupers, nudibranchs, and astrospartus. The presence of shark’s eggs hints at the potential for larger predators in the area, though sightings may be less frequent.
The best time to visit Murata di Sant'Agostino is during the warmer months, typically from spring to autumn, when visibility is generally at its best and water temperatures are more comfortable. Stronger currents can be experienced at times, particularly in the deeper parts of the shoal, so divers should be aware of this and adjust their plans accordingly. Due to the depth, this is not a site suitable for freediving or snorkeling.
