This dive site, La Montagna di Scilla, is located at the foot of the Rock of Scylla in Southern Italy. The dive involves descending to a submerged cliff, reaching depths of 30-40 meters, where a prominent pinnacle, "La Montagna," rises majestically. Navigation is straightforward; the pinnacle serves as a clear landmark. The site's name references the mythical creature Scylla from Greek mythology, adding a touch of legend to this underwater adventure.
Marine life thrives around La Montagna. The pinnacle is covered in vibrant two-colored gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata), providing habitat for a variety of fish species, including smaller reef fish and invertebrates. The rich gorgonian forests attract invertebrates and smaller fish ideal for macro photography. While larger pelagic species might be less frequent, smaller, colourful fish are abundant.
The best time to visit is during the warmer months (June to September) when visibility is typically at its best and the water is warmer. Due to the depth and potential currents, this site is not suitable for beginners or freediving. Divers should be comfortable with deeper dives and moderate currents, and always check current conditions before embarking on the dive. Appropriate buoyancy control is essential for safe navigation among the gorgonian forests.
