This dive site, Canaloni, near Riva di Traiano, offers a diverse underwater landscape. The site features a relatively flat sandy bottom interspersed with rocky outcrops and distinctive rock formations known as 'canaloni' (channels or canyons). These formations are richly colonized by vibrant yellow gorgonians and red coral, creating a visually stunning environment. Navigation is generally straightforward, following the rocky structures and sandy channels.
The marine life at Canaloni is abundant and varied. You can expect to see a range of fish, including sea bream and numerous nudibranchs. Moray eels, conger eels, and lobsters are common sightings, adding to the excitement of the dive. The presence of gorgonians and red coral also supports a healthy invertebrate population.
The best time to visit Canaloni is during the warmer months, typically from spring to autumn, when water temperatures are pleasant and visibility is often at its best. Strong currents are not usually a significant issue here, making it appropriate for experienced freedivers as well as scuba divers. Good buoyancy control is recommended to avoid damaging the delicate coral formations.
