Wilder Mann, located in Lake Constance near Meersburg, is a unique and challenging dive site best explored during the winter months, specifically permitted from October 31st to March 15th. This site is particularly suited for experienced divers and freedivers due to its cold, deep freshwater environment and steep wall topography. The walls descend rapidly, leading to step-like formations that offer interesting exploration.
Divers can enter comfortably from the Meersburg promenade, especially when visibility is good, and might even spot people above. Following the wall structures is the primary method of navigation. At considerable depths, an old fountain, often simply called 'the fountain,' awaits discovery. Further exploration can lead to two old car wrecks, though these require some travel to reach.
Visibility is generally good, particularly at depth. The site is home to unique freshwater flora and fauna, and over 30 species of fish, including various river fish, can be observed, though their distribution varies with season and water conditions. Given the cold water and deep profiles, proper cold water gear, including dry suits, is highly recommended. Divers must also be mindful of local ferry schedules to avoid potential boat traffic hazards.
