This dive site, Waidsee, is a fascinating quarry pond located near Weinheim, approximately 15 km northeast of Mannheim, Germany. Formed in the late 1960s due to extensive gravel mining, it is now a popular freshwater dive spot with the A5 highway running directly past it. Access to the Waidsee is managed year-round exclusively through a local dive center, ensuring a controlled and organized diving experience. Its limited depth and calm waters make navigation straightforward for all skill levels.
The Waidsee is renowned for its abundant aquatic life, featuring numerous perch and pike that are regularly sighted. A particular highlight for divers is the frequent presence of very large catfish, which add an impressive element to the underwater encounters. During the colder winter months, these majestic catfish are often observed in the shallower sections of the lake, offering unique photo opportunities.
With a maximum depth of 8 meters and an average depth of 4 meters, Waidsee is ideal for beginner divers, training sessions, and those looking for a relaxed freshwater experience. The best time to visit for spotting large catfish is undoubtedly winter. Both snorkelers and freedivers will find the shallow, calm conditions accommodating for exploring the freshwater environment and observing its resident fish population, making it an excellent all-round site.
