This dive site, Paakkila Louhos, is an abandoned quarry system in Finland, offering a unique underwater environment for divers of all skill levels. It comprises two main quarries, historically used for mining, which are uniquely connected by a 120-meter long tunnel. An additional side tunnel extends to 25 meters deep, providing further exploration opportunities. The open water area can reach depths of up to 30 meters, while the site is typically dived to a maximum of 16 meters, with an average depth of 8 meters. It caters from open water training to challenging cave diving experiences.
Marine life is notably absent from Paakkila Louhos. Divers will not encounter fish, corals, or other typical aquatic fauna. The only observed life forms are small water insects such as water hoppers and mosquito larvae, which contribute little to the visual interest of the dive.
While marine life is not a draw, Paakkila Louhos is ideal for divers seeking topography, tunnel exploration, and cold water diving experience. The best time to visit for clarity might be outside of periods with high rainfall or runoff. Given Finland's climate, drysuit diving is typically recommended year-round. For freedivers, the open water area with its potential for deeper descents (up to 30m) offers excellent training opportunities, while experienced divers can enjoy the extensive tunnel system.
