This dive site, Golden Blocks, is located a short drive south of Dahab, Egypt, and offers a relaxed and enjoyable diving experience suitable for all levels, especially beginners. The dive starts on a shallow, gently sloping reef, characterized by sandy patches interspersed with boulders and coral formations. Navigation is straightforward, with the reef gradually descending to a maximum depth of 23 meters. At around 18 meters, the reef transitions into a more enclosed structure, still with sandy pathways creating an interesting underwater landscape.
The abundant marine life is a major highlight. Expect to encounter a variety of colorful fish, including glassfish and bannerfish in large schools. Smaller creatures such as tailless pipefish and scorpionfish offer excellent opportunities for macro photography. Larger inhabitants like blue-spotted rays, occasionally dolphins and even whale sharks (during October), add excitement to the dive. Gorgonians add splashes of vibrant color to the canyon at slightly deeper depths.
The best time to visit is during the warmer months (spring and autumn), when visibility is usually excellent and the water is calm. While the site is generally calm, divers should be aware of potential currents and pay attention to their depth. For freedivers, the shallow, well-defined areas offer ideal training spots, while the possibility of larger marine life makes it an exciting location for those confident in their skills. Remember to maintain buoyancy control to avoid damaging the delicate coral structures.
