El Shugarat, also known as 'Little Trees' in Arabic, is a unique boat-access-only dive site located approximately 14km south of Dahab, Egypt, reachable by a 50-minute boat ride. Divers typically begin their exploration on a sandy plateau that descends steeply from 20 meters, often navigating in a northerly direction. The dive often starts with a drop-off directly beside the reef, descending along a beautiful coral wall to a sandy bottom. The main attraction is an impressive open canyon, found on the deep side of the reef, which extends from 16 meters to 50 meters, offering a dramatic underwater landscape. Navigating between the canyon walls reveals two large black corals and beyond the canyon, a vibrant forest of giant gorgonian fan corals awaits, extending into deeper waters.
The diverse marine life at El Shugarat is abundant. Look for elusive long-nosed hawkfish nestled within the gorgonians, colorful nudibranchs, blue-spotted rays, crocodile fish, and octopus. Larger pelagic species such as barracudas, snappers, fusiliers, turtles, tunas, and mackerel are also frequently sighted. The ascent takes you back towards the reef table and into a stunning lagoon boasting giant table corals and abundant marine life. Divers should be aware of moderate to strong currents, especially in the canyon and around the gorgonian forest, making a dive guide recommended for those less experienced with current-influenced dives. The best time to visit is during the warmer months (spring and fall) for excellent visibility and comfortable water temperatures. Freediving is not recommended due to the depth and potential currents.
