This dive site, known as Dolphin House or Gota Shaab el Erg, is located west of the main Shaab El Erg reef in Egypt. It's characterized by a channel cutting through the reef, creating a passageway where dolphins frequently swim and play. Navigating the channel requires awareness of the moderate current, which can be a significant factor, especially for less experienced divers. The reef itself is relatively shallow, offering a pleasant and accessible dive for those comfortable with currents.
Marine life is abundant at Dolphin House. The site's fame stems from the dolphins that utilize it as a hunting ground and resting area. Large pelagic fish are common sightings including a notable two-meter long Napoleon wrasse. Large rays also frequently appear in the area, adding to the diversity of the underwater scene. Various smaller reef fish and corals complete the vibrant ecosystem.
The best time to visit is during the warmer months, generally from April to October, when water temperatures are most pleasant and visibility is generally better. For freediving, the shallow to moderate depth makes this a suitable location, although the current needs to be carefully considered. It's highly recommended to dive this site with a reputable dive center, especially if you are unfamiliar with the region or have limited experience managing moderate currents.
