This dive site features the historic wreck of the S.S. Numidia, a British cargo steamer that ran aground on the northern tip of Big Brother reef on July 20, 1901, sinking weeks later. The wreck rests upright, starting at a depth of around 15 meters, descending to 34 meters at the maximum accessible recreational depth. Deeper sections, including the stern at 40 meters and the propeller between 70 and 80 meters, cater to technical divers. Navigating this majestic wreck reveals its intact structure, often covered in corals.
The Numidia wreck and surrounding reef are home to a vibrant ecosystem. Divers can expect to see schooling barracuda, trevally, and various reef fish such as groupers and snappers. The healthy corals growing on the wreck itself provide shelter for smaller marine life, while the open water often brings encounters with oceanic white-tip sharks, grey reef sharks, and hammerheads, especially around Big Brother.
The best time to visit the Numidia is generally from spring to autumn, when pelagic encounters are more frequent and water temperatures are warmer. Divers should be experienced in wreck diving and comfortable with potential strong currents, which are common around Big Brother Island. Due to its depth and remote location, the site is exclusively accessed by liveaboard and is not suitable for snorkeling or beginner freediving.
