This dive site, Abu Hamra, is renowned for its thrilling 30-meter tunnel, which begins after an entry via the reef top. Navigating the tunnel, which can take around 4 minutes, culminates in a small hole at the end, providing a unique and adventurous experience for divers. While there can be current within the tunnel, skilled navigation allows access to the vibrant outer reef.
Beyond the tunnel, divers are rewarded with an abundance of very nice soft corals and impressive boulder formations. The marine life is diverse, featuring wrasses, snappers, crabs, and nudibranchs. Larger inhabitants include giant moray eels, turtles, eagle rays, and scorpion fishes, making for exciting encounters.
Abu Hamra is best visited during the generally favorable diving conditions of the Red Sea, which often means year-round suitability, with calmer seas typically found in spring and autumn. Divers should be comfortable with confined spaces and aware of potential currents. While the reef top may offer some snorkeling opportunities, the main attraction and the tunnel itself are best suited for experienced scuba divers.
