About this dive site

This dive site, known as Roca Sucia or Dirty Rock, is a prominent pinnacle located approximately 8km off the coast, situated on the route from Potrero Flamingo to Catalinas in Costa Rica. While the primary dive area mentioned has a maximum depth of 20 meters, the site itself offers a shallow part (8-13m) near the pinnacle on the east side, with depths extending to 35m to the north and 27m to the south for more experienced divers. There is no specific historical account or story provided for the site.

The marine life at Roca Sucia is exceptionally rich and diverse, with divers frequently encountering large pelagic species such as sharks, rays, and turtles. A distinctive feature of this site is the unique interaction on the east side, where barber fish, king angel fish, and chancho surgeon fish are known to follow divers, creating an engaging and memorable experience. The general abundance suggests a thriving ecosystem with a wide variety of reef fish and other marine inhabitants.

Dirty Rock is diveable all year round, though divers should be prepared for potentially strong and variable currents, which add an element of challenge. The site caters to all levels, with its accessible shallow areas for beginners and deeper sections for advanced divers seeking more exhilarating conditions. Freedivers can also explore the shallower parts, but should exercise caution due to the currents. It is an ideal location for wide-angle photography, capturing the interactions with curious fish and impressive pelagic encounters.
