About this dive site

This dive site, Playa Ocotal, is located at a rocky point just west of the main gray sand beach near Playas del Coco, Costa Rica. Primarily known as a vibrant snorkeling location, its shallow depths and protected rocky structures make it an ideal spot for new divers to gain confidence or for experienced divers seeking macro life. Navigation is straightforward, following the rocky contours where most of the marine activity is concentrated.

The waters here are teeming with a diverse array of Eastern Pacific marine life. Snorkelers and divers can expect to encounter colorful butterflyfish, elegant angelfish, distinctive porcupinefish, and dozens of other fascinating fish species that thrive among the rocks. While not known for large pelagics, the abundance of reef fish offers a rich visual experience.

The best time to visit Playa Ocotal for diving and snorkeling is generally during the dry season (December to April) when water conditions are typically calmer and visibility is at its best. Its extreme shallowness makes it exceptionally suitable for freedivers and snorkelers seeking extended bottom time and easy access. Divers should be mindful of potential boat traffic given its proximity to a busy beach, and appreciate the site for its rich small marine life rather than deep explorations.
