This dive site, Coco Bay, is located off the coast of Playas del Coco in Costa Rica. It is primarily known as an excellent training ground due to its calm, sandy conditions and relatively shallow depths. Divers typically navigate over a gently sloping sandy bottom, using the sparse rock formations as points of interest for finding marine life and practicing navigation skills. There is no specific historical wreck or story mentioned, but its calm nature makes it a popular spot for dive centers to conduct beginner certifications and rescue skill drills.
Despite its sandy appearance, Coco Bay surprisingly hosts a variety of small marine creatures. Divers can expect to encounter elusive seahorses, colorful nudibranchs, snake eels hidden in the sand, and various pufferfish. Every small rock acts as a mini-reef, attracting a diverse range of smaller fish and invertebrates, making it a productive site for macro photography.
The calm conditions make Coco Bay suitable for diving year-round, though the dry season (December to April) typically offers the best visibility. This site is highly recommended for beginners, those practicing new skills like navigation or buoyancy, and macro photographers. Freedivers will also find the shallow, calm environment ideal for practicing breath-hold techniques and exploring the bottom for small critters.
