This dive site, Killer Pillar, is a unique spot in the Cayman Islands, primarily known for being one of the few places to observe the rarely seen pillar coral. Divers can easily navigate by locating the pillar coral approximately 20 feet north-easterly from the mooring line, situated on the edge of a mini wall. The site's name likely derives from this distinctive coral formation, making it a distinctive landmark underwater.
The vibrant reef is home to a variety of marine life including schooling grunts, colorful snappers, and busy parrotfish. Divers often spot octopuses camouflaged among the corals and rocks, adding an element of discovery. The star attraction remains the elegant, vertically growing pillar coral, a true rarity.
The Cayman Islands offer excellent diving conditions year-round, with the calmest seas typically from May to November. This site is particularly suitable for beginner divers due to its shallow average depth. Both snorkelers and freedivers will appreciate the accessibility of the pillar coral and the abundant marine life at shallower depths, making it an enjoyable experience for all water enthusiasts.
