This dive site, Sem Âncora (meaning "without anchor" in Portuguese), earned its name from an amusing history where dive staff reportedly forgot the anchor twice, leading to unintentional drift dives. Despite this, it is usually a tranquil spot with an average depth of 9 meters, reaching a maximum of 18 meters. Divers may explore slightly deeper areas, up to 22 meters, when venturing further from the main underwater 'mountain' features.
Sem Âncora boasts a vibrant marine ecosystem, with observations of over 12 different fish species. The site is particularly renowned for sightings of larger marine life, including various Rayas (rays) and Turtles, which are frequently encountered by divers. The diverse fish population suggests a healthy and thriving underwater environment.
The site's calm nature and accessible depths make it an excellent choice for beginner divers and freedivers alike. Its unique history as a "drift dive" (even if unintentional) adds an interesting element to the experience. For optimal diving conditions and marine life encounters, the best time to visit Cabo Verde is generally during its dry season, from November to July.
