This dive site, the Naufragio do Moreno near Ilhas Maricas, Brazil, features a dismantled wreck resting at a shallow depth, creating a fascinating habitat for a variety of marine life. The wreck itself provides numerous nooks and crannies to explore, offering opportunities for close-up observation of the diverse ecosystem that has established itself there. Navigation is straightforward due to the shallow depth and the wreck's relatively large structure acting as a point of reference.
Marine life is abundant around the wreck. Large eels are a common sight, often seen slithering amongst the wreckage. Numerous nudibranchs add a splash of color, clinging to the metal surfaces. Other inhabitants include stingrays, turtles, and a variety of fish species, adding to the diversity of this underwater ecosystem.
The shallow and calm conditions make this an ideal dive site for all levels of experience, even for freediving. The best time to visit would likely be during the warmer months (October to March) when visibility is generally better and marine life is more active. Divers and freedivers should remember to maintain a safe distance from the marine life, especially the eels, and to practice good buoyancy control to avoid damaging the delicate ecosystem around the wreck.
