This dive site features the wreck of the ship Copérnico, which met its demise in 1883 due to a fire. Its cargo included valuable items like porcelains, sewing machines, and marbles, which can still be found among its remains. The wreck is exceptionally shallow, with depths varying from 0 to 10 meters and parts even exposed during low tides, making it a unique historical underwater exploration.
Due to its proximity to the busy Port of Recife and consistently very bad visibility throughout the year, the Copérnico dive site unfortunately presents a low diversity of marine animals. Divers should not expect to encounter a wide array of specific fish species, vibrant corals, or larger marine creatures, with only general marine life typically observed.
Given the perpetually poor visibility, there isn't a specific 'best time' to visit for improved underwater conditions. The focus of this dive is primarily on the historical shipwreck itself and its scattered artifacts. Its extremely shallow nature makes it well-suited for both snorkeling and freediving, appealing to those interested in wreck exploration and history rather than abundant marine biodiversity.
